GABI PURDUE
St. Agnes Student Center
Located on St. Augustine's Campus in Southeast Raleigh is an important landmark that many people do not realize exists. In 1909 teachers and students supported by the administration designed and built St. Agnes Hospital to provide much needed health services to African-Americans from North Carolina and beyond. Our objective for this project was to find a need in the community and use that to repurpose this beautiful, decaying building. The need I discovered was a student center. Many students on campus did not even know what that meant and were in much need of a space to collaborate with other students/friends. My design proposed a new student center that could be used at certain times of the day for community members as well who may need career assistance or printing needs. The shell of St. Agnes would be used as an outdoor events space that members of the community or students could rent out to host events. I wish to return the function to primarily student use while also allowing collaboration between community members and students that at the moment is non-existent.
